ALS is a  progressive disease that is almost always fatal. ALS gradually paralyzes a person until they can no longer walk, use their hands, talk, eat or breathe.

  • There is no effective treatment and no known cure.

  • The average life expectancy is 2-5 years from the time of diagnosis.

  • ALS care can cost more than $200,000 per year.

  • 5-10% of ALS diagnoses are hereditary. There is no family history in the other 90-95% of cases.

  • Every day, 15 people are diagnosed with ALS.

  • Every day, 15 people with ALS die.

  • It is estimated that 30,000 Americans are living with ALS at any one moment and that more than 1,000 of them live in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area.

  • Military Veterans are nearly twice as likely to develop ALS than the general population regardless of when or where they served.
