FACTS ABOUT ALS
ALS is a progressive disease that is almost always fatal. ALS gradually paralyzes a person until they can no longer walk, use their hands, talk, eat or breathe.
There is no effective treatment and no known cure.
The average life expectancy is 2-5 years from the time of diagnosis.
ALS care can cost more than $200,000 per year.
5-10% of ALS diagnoses are hereditary. There is no family history in the other 90-95% of cases.
Every day, 15 people are diagnosed with ALS.
Every day, 15 people with ALS die.
It is estimated that 30,000 Americans are living with ALS at any one moment and that more than 1,000 of them live in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area.
Military Veterans are nearly twice as likely to develop ALS than the general population regardless of when or where they served.
